As a refugee from hard winters in Montana, Tom asks: When is your new guide for the middle Gulf Coast going to print? I need it. Campbells Guide to Cruising Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana is on hold. We hope to be able to offer it late in 2008 or early 2009. Monty from San Leon inquired: "I noticed on the Cape Dory owners website that you cruised your Cape Dory 25 to the Bahamas. Tell me how, because there doesn't seem to be much information available for small boat cruising." Poor Monty probably got a lot more than he bargained for. His question resulted in an e-mail reply of more than 25 pages. Watch for it to appear in a new "Feature Article" addition to this website. From Seabrook, Blaine complains: ...at Matagorda Harbor, the Bay City Port Authority forces transients to tie to the bulkhead. Why? What alternatives are available? When the harbor at Matagorda first opened, everyone who runs the ditch rejoiced, cause it added a protected layover, particularly when the Colorado is in flood. The transient spaces along the bulkhead were installed so that they lie outside of the security gates for the docks holding permanent tenants. Beware, however, narrow, deep draft boats will bump on the concrete bank-reinforcement which slopes into the deep water of the harbor while lying alongside (Cassiopeia does). Also, the prevailing wind can make departures require plenty of fendering, spring lines and a powerful engine. Folks whod rather anchor nearby should head about 1/4 mile down the new river outlet channel, between the locks. If the river is running, try anchoring alongside the west bank of the marked channel to the jetties; access is between the swing bridge and the east lock. Traffic through these jetties has historically been light, but anchor fore-and-aft along the bank so as not to block the channel. As the yacht club officer responsible for meeting programs, Gloria inquired: How can we get you to give our club customized cruising advice? Do you have a dog-and-pony show to go with Campbell's Guides? Just ask and well schedule a customized slide show. Some groups want to know about the whole coast, while others are interested in a specific area. Write, call or e-mail with your requests. Richard and Julie from Seabrook write: We anchored in the San Bernard [River] and thought we were in paradise (our favorite anchorage). We really used your guide on our 10 day trip this summer aboard our Cape Dory 28. The Serendipity Marina bath houses are 4-star. We thought Palacios was the best! The San Bernard is a great spot to anchor, but Serendipity Bay Resort at Palacios is plenty of fun for all the crew. The park along the edge of the bay has really been spruced up. Let us hear
from you. Snail- or e-mail works great. We'll see
yall out there... |
