The Texas City Dike extends far into Galveston Bay to retard shoaling of the Texas City Ship Channel. As a side benefit, it provides an excellent recreational area for sailing off a sandy beach. The north shore is most often the leeward side during the summertime.

The tall-ship Elissa, berthed in Galveston, periodically cruises up the bay. Shown lying at anchor off the Houston Yacht Club, this visit coincided with the annual Elissa Regatta.

Offatts Bayou, on the bay-side of Galveston Island, is a premier cruising destination on Galveston Bay and the Texas Gulf Coast. An area large enough to anchor 200+ boats on a holiday weekend with deep (10-20 feet), clean water, the bayou is well-protected and provides easy access to Galveston's many attractions.
